Pregnancy is one of the most important milestones in a woman’s adult life, however, it is often accompanied by changes in her breast, abdomen, and body. Lactation can result in deflated, saggy breasts and magnify any previous asymmetries. Unwanted accumulations of fat in the belly, hips, and thighs appear and remain, despite the resumption of exercise and dietary regimens. Abdominal laxity is the result of splaying of muscles, which, unfortunately, cannot be corrected with exercise.
Mommy Makeover is a term which describes the combination of procedures designed to restore a woman’s pre-pregnancy body. It has been suggested that the role of Plastic Surgery is to “restore that which time, age and infirmity have taken away”. Motherhood requires a woman to wear multiple hats and to produce effortlessly. The components of a Mommy Makeover will be determined by the areas which cause greatest dissatisfaction. During the course of a consultation, a prospective Mommy Makeover candidate is encouraged to identify “problem” areas, disclose all medical conditions, and be realistic about who will cover her duties during her convalescence. The longevity or success of a Mommy Makeover, which may include several procedures, depends not only on surgical/anesthetic teamwork but also the patient’s ability to maintain her healthy lifestyle by following a sensible regimen of diet and exercise. Unplanned pregnancy after a Mommy Makeover will reverse much of the improvements, so we try to select women who have no future family planning, inform them of their options to prioritize and stage procedures, and optimize all aspects their experience.
