Ultherapy™ delivers focused ultrasound energy to the same foundational layer (SMAS) typically addressed by Dr. Chong during cosmetic surgery. This energy initiates the body’s natural response to stimulating the growth of fresh, new collagen and strengthen weak collagen. Some patients see an initial effect right after their treatment, but the real results appear over 2-3 months, as new collagen builds, gradually lifting and tightening skin on the face and neck, and smoothing skin on the chest.
As the ultrasound energy is delivered, you will feel some discomfort. Comfort levels vary from person to person, but the sensation only lasts while the energy is being delivered. Your comfort is very important to Dr. Chong. Our pain management consists of oral medications, effective numbing creams, and IV sedation if needed.
Unlike laser, radio-frequency and other technologies, Ultherapy™ bypasses the surface of the skin to deliver energy at optimal depths, temperature, and precision. Also unique to Ultherapy™ is the use of ultrasound imaging, which allows Dr. Chong to see the layers of the tissue they are treating, ensuring energy is delivered safely and to where it will be most beneficial. As with other ultrasound procedures, Dr. Chong will place the transducer on your skin allowing it to project an image onto a screen. She will then use the applicator to deliver the energy and heat at the precise level of depth below your skin to achieve the desired result. While Ultherapy™ does not duplicate the results of a facelift, it’s an exciting alternative for those who are not ready for surgery, or for those patients who wish to extend the effects of cosmetic surgery.
Without cutting or disrupting the surface of the skin, there is little downtime after the procedure. Some patient’s may experience swelling or bruising for several days following the treatment. Dr. Chong is very excited that Ultherapy™ counteracts the effects of aging by using your body’s own healing response. If you would like to learn more, we encourage you to contact us and let us schedule your complimentary consultation. After your evaluation, Dr. Chong will determine if you are a good candidate for this amazing facelift technology that is sweeping the nation!
Ultherapy™ is commonly used on areas of the face, neck and chest and improvements include:
What will the recovery be like?
Relatively easy. Some patients observe that they experienced temporary, 7-10 days, tenderness, swelling, and/or itchiness over the treated areas. No additional measures or medications were required.
Does it hurt?
It is important to set the expectation before scheduling, and all non-sedation procedures are done with topical anesthetic cream and medications to modify the patient’s perception of pain.
Ultimately, the best outcomes result when all variables are optimized: patient safety, comfort, and delivery of sufficient energy to promote collagen stimulation.
Will I bruise?
Like any procedure, bruising is possible, especially in the jaw adjacent to the chin, where veins are superficial. Arnica gel and tablets, icing and gradual resumption of activities are helpful to prevent bruises. If you identify a bruise within 24 hours after Ultherapy, we can treat with the Cutera XL laser to disperse the blood and accelerate the resolution.
What is the downtime?
Assuming no bruising, there is no “downtime”. You can resume normal activities the next day.
How long will the results last?
Do realize that our bodies are constantly changing. As we age, we synthesize less collagen and break down more, so there is a net deficit in collagen support. After an Ultherapy treatment, there is a “building” lag, which averages 3-6 months, during which gradual collagen synthesis improves the landscape. Like anything else, the longevity of results depends on whether you continue to enjoy good health, maintain a stable weight, and age well.
How many treatments do I need?
Ultherapy is designed to be a single treatment. The adoption of Ultherapy into my practice has expanded my indications for facial rejuvenation to younger individuals or those whose health status is incompatible with surgery, ethnic minorities, males & post-facelift patients, who aren’t ready for another surgical procedure. Patient selection is important, for both the patient and provider have to realize that Ultherapy results aren’t equivalent to a surgical face-lift.
Is it safe to do over dermal fillers? Over facial implants?
It is rare to encounter patients who haven’t already had dermal fillers, so Ultherapy can be safely administered. I advise waiting 3-6 months afterward to evaluate the results, prior to proceeding with fillers. Ultherapy discourages treatment over facial implants.
How does this compare to other nonsurgical skin tightening procedures?
After 2.5 years Ultherapy experience, I am pleased to report that Ultherapy has provided safe, consistent results for my patients. The mechanism of micro-focused ultrasound has been configured to accurately deliver energy much deeper and to multiple layers than both lasers and radiofrequency devices, without risk of erratic hyperpigmentation and destruction of fat.
Do I need sedation?
Be candid discussing your pain threshold so we can make appropriate arrangements. Some are better served by having IV sedation; others are perfectly fine with less.
Does Ultherapy melt fat?
No. Facial fat is a valuable commodity, which should be preserved. Ultherapy’s collagen stimulation and subsequent skin lifting do appear to make problem areas of fat less conspicuous.
